On a fresh installed Windows XP, with FF installed, FF knows how to
open a blank Outlook Express message ready for composition, with the
To: e-mail address passed from the web page.

On a Windows Vista 64 system, FF knows how to open a blank Windows Live
Mail message ready for composition, with the To: e-mail address passed
from the web page.

So in FF it appears there is already a mechanism to do that, at least
for Microsoft e-mail clients.
