Recently someone (who may or may not work at Google, it wasn't clear)
pointed out to me that the use of Google's App passwords *SHOULD* be a work
around to the upcomin OAuth2 mail-client requirement. Afterwards I did
some digging around and found that a couple of years ago Gene Goldenfield
here on the Sylpheed list enumerated the instructions for setting up App
Passwords:

After the September 30th cutoff date I plan on trying App Passwords first,
and if they fail to work as described I'll make the jump to an alternate
provider.
