EQUALS SIGN is not specific to Unicode, but rather a basic
ASCII character.

A way to reproduce the problem would come in handy.  For
example, does your Sylpheed fail to open the following link
with the equals sign?--

If it was found in an HTML e-mail, try saving the HTML
attachement to HDD and examining it in the browser and text
editor.
