Additional info: SSL v3.0 has been deprecated in June - for details see RFC 7568
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7568 , so maybe with the TLS update you could remove that altogether...

Wow. It not only takes care of the latter, it also fixes the first part: as soon as the lower panel is hidden, simple clicking on an unread message will no longer change it to "read", only double-clicking (opening a new window) will do that now.

IOW: perfect!
