You have probably heard of emojis lately, a sort of picture characters.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoji

You can especially get them from Mac and iOS users.

Unicode fonts are rarely complete, so among the 60 emojis displayed
here you will probably see missing characters, depending on the font.

☺ ☹ ☺️ 😆 😦 👩‍ 👩‍ 👧‍ 👦 👨
👋 👍 👎 ☝️ 👆 👦 👧 👨 👩 👮
🌱 🌲 🌳 🌴 🌵 🐀 🐁 🐭 🐹 🐂
⚡️ 🔥 🌙 ☀️ ⛅️ 🎀 🎁 🎂 🎃 🎄
❤️ 💔 💌 💕 💞 🏃 🚶 💃 🚣 🏊
🎹 🎸 🎻 🎷 🎺 ♠️ ♣️ ♥️ ♦️ ☑️

Now what I've discovered is this: you can download the EmojiSymbols
font from here: http://emojisymbols.com/ , use FontForge to convert
the .woff font into a .ttf font and install it.
(To install in Linux, just put the font into ~/.fonts or
/usr/local/share/fonts.)

... -OR- directly download the EmojiSymbols-Regular.ttf font I converted
myself: http://home.kpn.nl/shiems/stuff/EmojiSymbols-Regular.ttf
and install it.

Now you will see all emojis displayed here correctly!
Although the message text and header text are set to a very different
font, Sylpheed apparently finds the emojis in the EmojiSymbols font if
they are missing in the regular font.
In fact, in Sylpheed the EmojiSymbols font serves as an extension for
the unicode font you use for the message & header texts.
