It has spell checking for the unix/linux client, but not the windows
client.  There are other apps, like claws (a fork from the main
sylpheed branch) and pan (a newsreader) that do have built-in spell
checking in their windows versions.  I have not specifically looked to
see if they are all under the same sort of license, but they're all
FOSS.
