If I search a folder with the search box that is above the email-listing
pane (and not the search window that pops up as a result of Shft-Ctrl-F),
the only emails that are shown are the ones meeting my criterion.

I can then type ctrl-A to select all and then click on one and drag the
entire bunch to a folder in the folder-listing pane on the left.

This, then, must use different code. I'm running 3.3.0 on CentOS 5.9.
