It seems, we talk about different things:
1) I about possibility of open messages from list only in new window (with permanent disabled "Message view" area).
2) you about some preferences of message list (maybe, I not right, I am not english-speak man).

It is possivle to collapse view area by moving to the bottom areas separator. It position is keept beetween program lanuches. BUT, behaviour is not good: to open message in new window you must produce two double clicks: first loads message body to the view area, second opens msg in new window.
