For what it's worth, I use both rsync and IMAP. Fetchmail uses IMAP to 
pull them from the server into local mailbox directories, but leave them 
on the server. Then I rsync $HOME/Mail between my home PCs.

That way, both home PCs are up to date, I can use Sylpheed to read and 
reply, *and* I can still access my email via webmail when I am away.
