  I think all boils down to showing the fingerprints of the certificates
  (the old one and the new one) so they can be really differentiated when
  they change, as currently this is not displayed.

  Of course, a full certificate management like in browsers would be better,
  as one of the reporters suggests, but not sure if this is planned in the
  sylpheed near future, and is surely hard to implement.
