Hi Gene,

Just double click any message (in the top right pane).  It opens the
message in a separate window.  If you just click on the message (in the
top right pane) it opens the message in the bottom right pane.  If you
activate the "mark message as read only when opened in a new window",
just clicking on the message opens it in the lower right pane but
leaves the message in bold.  It appears that this is partially
what you want to do.  Read the message, but leave it "unread".
