Sylpheed is included with Fedora 9. No need to compile it yourself.
If, however, you insist on building it, base your work on the existing
RPM package.

You cannot compile Sylpheed from tarball on Fedora 9, because GtkSpell
uses Enchant instead of ASpell. Refer to the older messages about that
posted to this list.
