Is it 100% reproducible, so you can list the steps on how to reproduce it?

Your problems sound unusual/weird enough to assume that it's specific to
Ubuntu. I haven't heard about such problems before. I here run Fedora 10
and cannot reproduce the symptoms.

$ rpm -q sylpheed gtk2 glib2
sylpheed-2.6.0-0.1.rc.fc10.i386
gtk2-2.14.4-3.fc10.i386
glib2-2.18.3-2.fc10.i386

Note that there is quite some activity in the gtk2 package changelog
related to the 2.14.x series:
