Try install package libglib2.0-dev and libgtk2.0-dev.

Or try my package for Etch: 
1) Add
     deb http://mamut.spseol.cz/debs etchports main
to /etc/apt/sources.list

2) update list of packages
# aptitude update

3) install sylpheed
# aptitude install sylpheed
