I have no "another Linux box" available.

Just as an example, I have installed Opera browser on my Eee PC by
downloading the "Other/Static DEB" offcial package and installing it by
rightclick -> install or something like that. It worked well that way.
If I remember correctly, I have done the same way with VLC media player.

I have found somewhere in a Debian repository a suitable Sylpheed
package for direct instaIl, but it is version 2.3.0 or something.

But ok, I will follow the suggestion on asking the Xandros community.
