I agree.
The way Opera's built-in mail client handles things is like this:
* When a new message comes in, it's unread and unseen. The message text in
the list is blue.
* When you view a message, the message becomes seen, but is still unread.
The message text in the list changes to a bolded black.
Yes, if you have "list and message below" or "list and message on right"
set as the layout (as opposed to "list only" where you double-left-click
to open the message in a new tab), when you select an item in the message
list, the message for that item opens in the pane and the message becomes
seen.
* Since there's no way for Opera to tell if you've actually read the
message or not, the message only becomes read (normal black text in list)
when you explicitly mark the message as read. And, you should only mark
the message as read when you've actually read it.
For IMAP, the "\Seen" flag is only removed from the message when you
explicitly mark it as read. It's still there when the message is seen but
unread.
This works absolutely wonderfully in Opera.
Now, even though that's totally awesome, Opera has a "mark as read"
option. As you can guess from the above, by default, it's set to
"manually". But, you can set it to "after n seconds" where n is 1, 2, 3, 5
or 10. When you do this, even if you use "list and message below" or "list
and message on right", because it's never instant (0 seconds), you can go
through the message list (if you're fast enough) with the arrow keys
without marking every single message (that you select) as read.
