I have folders of similar sizes which open within 5-10 seconds on
freebsd using ufs.
On my old linux box it was a bit slower (10-15 seconds) that one had
xfs partitions. If you're on linux I can only recommend xfs it didn't
fail me once in my long time with linux. Although you should have a cpu
that can handle it. ;)

Back in the 90's when things were really slow I used to have a script
that grepped through sylpheeds mh folder and spliced every folder with
more than 50000 messages into several subfolders. That could be an
alternative.
