I found this solution a few days ago when I had a similar problem with
pidgin. Sadly I can't find neither the directory .sylpheed-2.0 nor
a .gtkrc-2.0 file on WinXP. There are only menurc files for gimp and
pidgin.

Should a .sylpheed-2.0 directory exist? 
Adding the line above to c:\gtk\etc\gtk-2.0\gtkrc doesn't help but
adding the line above to 
c:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\<user>\.gtkrc-2.0 works!
