thank you very much for your reply ;).

Was just wondering, because according to http://www.openssl.org/news it
seems like the 0.9.8* branch has not been updated for several month now
(almost a year) whereas the 1.0.0* branch seems to be updated regularly.

Also, question remains: how come the issue mentioned in the OP ("unable
to get local issuer certificate" message when trying to receive E-Mails
from Yahoo with SSL enabled) only seems to occur with Sylpheed on
Windows but not with Sylpheed on Linux or Thunderbird on Windows for
example? The message only seems to pop up on the Windows version of
Sylpheed. To be a bit more precise:

Sylpheed 3.1.2 and 3.2.0beta4 for Windows:
"unable to get local issuer certificate" message appears

Sylpheed 3.2.0beta3 (Lubuntu 11.10 Live Desktop CD):
no error message or whatever appears at all

Thunderbird 8.0 for Windows:
no error message or whatever appears at all

That's all with the same account settings. So, what's wrong with the
Windows version of Sylpheed suddenly?

Could this possibly be solved by upgrading OpenSSL to the latest
branch? If yes, will it be updated with the final version of Sylpheed
3.2? Or how could it be done?

And it would also be nice, if someone could explain how one would get
the correct certificate for Yahoo for example, so one could try what's
suggested in README-win32. Or is there maybe something like a regularly
updated "certs.crt" available somewhere or something like that? Or does
this only come with OpenSSL updates?

It would be very nice if someone could answer.
