[sylpheed:34104] Failed upgrading sylpheed from 2.7.1 to 3.0.2

Hi all,

I am not sure if it is appropriate to ask this kind of a question in this list, but I would appreciate it if someone could give me a hint for fixing this problem. 

I had Sylpheed-2.7.1 installed in Ubuntu 9.10 from the Ubuntu repository, but I wanted to upgrade it to version 3.0.2. 

With Sylpheed-2.7.1 remaining in my computer, I installed Sylpheed-3.0.2 with the source file (sylpheed-3.0.2.tar.gz). 

After installing, Sylpheed-3.0.2 did not start. Then, I removed Sylpheed-3.0.2 by typing the code: 

$ sudo aptitude purge sylpheed

And, then, I installed Sylpheed-3.0.2 with the source file. 
This time, Sylpheed-3.0.2 started. However, Sylpheed-3.0.2 seemed to ponder something, with the window coloured in grey, for a couple of minutes. I found sylpheed could not check email. I closed it. 

When I started sylpheed again by typing "sylpheed" in the terminal window, the same thing happened, and I got the following error messages.

After removing and reinstalling sylpheed-3.0.2 for a couple of times, I got the same error messages.  I made sure that my account settings are correct.  It seems that sylpheed cannot access the mail server, nor did check email. 

How can I fix this problem?  In the first place, can't I update sylpheed as long as I am using Ubuntu9.10?
