I am already using an Gmail app password with Sylpheed,
because I thought it was already required.  I thought that
after September the 30th the app password wouldn't work.
Looks like I was wrong:

   If the app you are using does not support OAuth, you will
   need to switch to an app that offers OAuth or create an
   app password to access these apps[1].
