I have no exact solution, but suggest that you check the
global and Sylpheed's GTK themes on your computer.  Here on
Windows XP my active Sylpheed theme is in:

  D:\PROGRAMS\Sylpheed\share\themes\MS-Windows\gtk-2.0\gtkrc

but for Linux it will be different.  You may consult the
GTK, XFCE, and your Linux community for futher help with
locating and editing the theme, e.g.:
