Google seem to have decided not to dynamite the bridges yet.
Gmail can be configured to keep working with normal e-mail
clients such as Sylpheed via a so-called "app password",
which should be used instead of the general Google account
password:

To put it short:--

  1. activate two-step verification,
  2. generate an app password,
  3. use the latter in the client.

Observe, however, that they discourage app passwords:

   App Passwords aren't recommended and are unnecessary in most
   cases.  To help keep your account secure, use "Sign in with
   Google" to connect apps to your Google Account.

and mefears may remove them altogether on another sad May

P.S.: To this moment, Sylpheed still works with Gmail, and
      won't fix it it ain't broke.  Let us await the
      morrow...
