No, my ISP does not supports newsgroups, but I registered for http://news.solani.org
that is free news provider. 
I can open any network ports and connections from my computer.

BTW, I forgot to specify what Sylpheed version I use: v3.5.0 build:1170
I installed it from the repositories of Manjaro Linux.
