It is impossible.  With Usenet, I

  1.  sort messages by thread date,

  2.  activate thread view, and

  3.  mark threads in which I am not  interested  as
      read.

For  the  latter  action  I  have created a keyboard
shortcut by highlighting the  menu  entry  with  the
mouse  and  pressing  the  desired  key combination.
This functionality may be enabled in

   <sylpheeddir>\share\themes\MS-Windows\gtk-2.0\gtkrc

by adding or uncommending the following line:

   gtk-can-change-accels = 1
