yes, I think you must be right.....

i have looked again at the README, the INSTALL and at the patches in ubuntu package and cannot see anything there to would show that setting for IMAP.

Anyway, if anyone knows what the default behavior is when Sylpheed does it first sync (see my original post), after setting up a new IMAP account, would be interesting to know.
