Hi Javier!

Sorry for my late reply. I did as you said and changed the setting for
socket I/O to a lower value (5 seconds, default was even 60 seconds in
my case!) and observed the situation for a few days. The change did
indeed make a large difference. Although things are still laggy due to
the bad ping of my mailbox, Sylpheed doesn't lock up anymore! It's a
lot faster and more stable, so at the moment everything seems fine.
Thanks a ton for the suggestion. That was really a life-saver!

For future reference (other users experiencing the same problem), the
settings is located at: Common Preferences -> Details -> Advanced
