I see what I did wrong, when making a new mailbox I used the default location rather than navigating to the new destination.
Digging deeper I found an example for Windows to make Sylpheed portable, then tried the same for Linux and it worked. Rather than using a symlink:
--configdir /mnt/home/sylpheed/.sylpheed-2.0
Do you have any comments?
