Sylpheed can export a folder of messages to an mbox file. It would make
sense to save an individual message to an mbox file too. This is what
Opera does.

In Opera, you can export a whole view as an mbox file (Opera uses the .mbs
extension tied to the application/mime type) or save a single message as
an mbox file. Mbox is the standard format for saving, loading, importing
and exporting messages across many clients.

An eml file is basically an mbox file with a single message in it, but the
eml file doesn't have a "From " line at the beginning. eml needs to be
supported too because of Microsoft clients and because Thunderbird
supports eml because of Microsoft clients. But, don't let them ruin the
mbox support.

Thunderbird supports mbox with
<http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html>.

Note though. In Sylpheed, if you open a message in a new tab and choose
"file -> save as" doesn't include the .eml extension like it does if you
invoke the "file -> save as" on the item for the message in the message
list.
