Spell checking in Claws is with Aspell. Not long ago, Aspell (on
Windows, at least) was 8-bit only (i.e. could not handle Unicode).

Just curious, today Aspell is stil 8-bit or has evolved ? Because in
8-bit mode it is unusable for my language (Romanian).
