  I'm not sure whether I understand you right, but 
      app-crypt/gpgme
comes as a Sylpheed dependency on my system. Here is the

  This is from the main portage tree -- nothing "homemade". And if I'm
not mistaking, I even did not have to make any additional Sylpheed
tuning for it to function properly with app-crypt/gnupg. The only
obvious thing I had to do is to generate the GPG key pairs, and that's
all.
