After a bit of testing and playing with the settings, i figured out
that the fault lies not with sylpheed, but with metacity....
It's window handling is broken in too many aspects to be described here.

So, just FYI: if you ever have problems with dialogs and are running
metacity (the default gnome2 window manager), then it's most likely
that the problem is metacity.
