On all my accounts I have messages ordered by date [%d/%m/%y (%a) %H:%M]
with newest at the top. (However, I might have had a different account
displayed to the one which triggered the crash).

In Common Preferences > Display :-

General Tab has these boxes checked - display unread number next to
folder name, expand threads

Message Tab has these boxes UNchecked - treat html only messages as
attachment, (scoll) halfpage, smoothscroll

I hope this helps.
