Persistently active preview vindow is convenient (lesser actions to daily review mailbox).
If it is possible to download message by press Enter or mouse click, this is intuitive. So, intuitive to not download messages while operations on list of titles.

Think you review your refrigerator with beer. Every bottle has title and manufacture date. Some bottles you open to investigate its content, some delete from fridge by title only (expire). After you delete some bottle, near one is opening itself, because the preview is avtive (refrigerator door is opened).
