Ok - solved. It seems something changed in the configuration...

- In Common Preferences|Details, 

'Always open messages in summary when selected' was set to 1 after
starting version 3.1b3, disabling 'Open first unread message when a
folder is opened'.

I'm not sure what that option means... 'when selected' means summary
selected? Or 'open messages in summary'? Can someone help here?
