I have tried to reproduce the problem, but with no success.
I have specified some fonts and font size (6-12pt) for gnome
application font, but all of them were displayed properly.
Tried with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (GTK+ 2.12.9) and 10.04 LTS (GTK+ 2.20.1).
