I have read the faq now... was there a main reason why they did not want HTML in emails?

I don't think Sylpheed will ever allow composing HTML mails, as they
are not very portable. See also the FAQ:

Someone in past proposed adding HTML mails _rendering_, but the
feature has never been coded.
