OK, I fixed it. please disregard my previous message.
I reread Marco's advice (below) and installed a couple of extra enchant libraries (and more specifically this one: "lib64enchant-devel-1.3.0-4mdv2008.1") and I checked the output of config.log, it did recognize gtkspell.
I recompiled and reinstalled and....spelling is there now!
Thanks a million Marco and all whom provided suggestions.
Sylpheed is my favorite email client and I was only missing the spelling!
