No doubt the ngettext support is a necessity for proper localization to
many, many languages around the world.
An interesting GNOME doc dealing with the plural forms is at:

Note that in GNOME, translators are obviously filing bugs to GNOME
Bugzilla whenever they encounter a lack of ngettext support in a GNOME app.
The important part is that those bugs are usually being fixed.
