Thanks.  Mariusz replied privately with where to put it in Opera:
Preferences > Advanced Tab-> Programs > mailto protocol. Adding the
'sylpheed --compose "%"' after the program address solved it. Changing
IE7's email option to Sylpheed solves it there.
