Why do I need cygwin?

I'm not using *nix version of Sylpheed through Cygwin, I'm running Sylpheed
on Windows natively.

I have MingW compiler that I'm already using with a different IDE, not GTK.
It allows me to compile Windows GUI applications.

Do I absolutely need cygwin and GTK still?

Also I do not see a source code or tar-ball for windows on the download
page. Where should I get source code for Windows?
