POP3 (with SSL/TLS, if it matters).  I can beforehand confirm that if I don't
open the "select file dialog" and can either continue composing the message
or press the stop button to cancel retrieval.

The problem described only happens when trying to attach a file with an
automatic retrieval happening at the same time.  I can avoid this by checking
mail right before composing a message.
