Just to be clear, because of terminology.
What do you mean by pgpool child?

In case of this configuration:

num_init_children = 32
max_pool = 4

32 childrens * 4 = 120 pgpool childs?

120*40MB = 4800MB

This looks like a bit too much, since it works fine on lower memory
configuration.
