First  of all, you are using an obsolette version of
Sylpheed, so please update.

When I open a message folder  of  an  IMAP  account,
Sylpheed is:

  1.  scanning folder,
  2.  setting summary from message data, and
  3.  sorting summary.

All these operations are necessary, and you can only
talk about their optimization.
